Our History

Located at the corner of Woodward and Adams in downtown Detroit, Noah at Central has been a cornerstone of support for the community for over 25 years.

1976

The roots of Noah at Central trace back to 1976, when the Central United Methodist Church began serving bag lunches to individuals experiencing homelessness. By 1999, recognizing the growing needs of the community, the church established Noah at Central (originally The NOAH Project) to expand these efforts into more comprehensive services.

1999

Over time, Noah at Central partnered with Family Services, Inc. to broaden its programming, adding social services and physical health counseling to the longstanding bag lunch program. These efforts laid the foundation for relationship-based case management, a hallmark of Noah’s approach. By getting to know clients personally, staff could walk alongside them to address their individual needs more effectively as programming grew.

2014

In 2014, during the coldest winter in Detroit’s history, Noah at Central launched the Noah Community Center. This space quickly became a hub for advocacy and collaboration, welcoming partner programs from across Detroit to provide health, wellness, and hygiene services.

2016

To reach individuals not engaged in services, the Street Outreach Team was established in 2016. This initiative meets individuals experiencing homelessness where they are, offering food, medical supplies, and connections to housing navigation services.

2018

In 2018, Noah at Central took another step forward by inviting CAM to share its space, transforming the community center into an official CAM access point. This partnership enables clients to access immediate shelter services and specialized community resource referrals directly on-site.

Through decades of growth and innovation, Noah at Central remains committed to empowering individuals experiencing homelessness and building a stronger, more compassionate community.
